Out Of Frame: An Art Apartment Designed by Cheng Hsuan Huang

Bringing Art and Lifestyle Together

The Out Of Frame apartment, designed by Cheng Hsuan Huang, is a unique blend of art and lifestyle. Inspired by art showrooms, this space seamlessly integrates the clients' art collection into their daily life, creating a distinctive and personalized living experience.

The apartment, located in Taichung City, spans 137 m2 and features an entrance, a living room, a master bedroom, two bedrooms for children, two bathrooms, and a kitchen. The design takes advantage of the original L-shaped layout of the living and dining area, allowing for flexible use of space. The clients' need for a large dining area was met by arranging a long dining table and a marble countertop island on the same axis, creating a spacious and inviting gathering space for the family and their guests.

The materials used in the apartment include steel pieces with titanium coating, pine plywood, white marble, wood herringbone parquet flooring for the bedrooms, and Pandomo for the public floor. The combination of white and gray paints, along with a main pastel green color and gold hardware accessories, adds a unique personality and warmth to the space. The cohesive use of materials and carefully chosen furniture create a harmonious and visually appealing interior.

One of the highlights of the Out Of Frame apartment is its lighting design. The lighting is carefully balanced, not too strong or bright, to create a gallery-like atmosphere. It highlights specific parts of the interior while maintaining a sense of harmony with the natural light. This intentional lighting design enhances the overall aesthetic and transforms the space into an art exhibition.

The design of the Out Of Frame apartment presented some challenges, particularly in sourcing the hardware accessories. The designer selected accessories from a London brand, which were not readily available in Taiwan. However, the effort was worth it as these accessories added character and uniqueness to the interiors, making each item feel like it has an interesting story behind it.

The Out Of Frame apartment was recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This award acknowledges the project's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to an improved quality of life.

Overall, the Out Of Frame apartment by Cheng Hsuan Huang is a testament to the seamless integration of art and lifestyle. With its cohesive design, unique materials, and carefully curated art collection, it offers a truly distinctive living experience that elevates the quality of life for its inhabitants.
